If you are a mom to a new baby, you’re likely to hear lots of discussion about whether or not it is important to swaddle. Many “seasoned” moms will state that they “never needed to swaddle in the past and their kids turned out fine” but there is a lot of commentary today about the “critical” importance of swaddling newborn babies in the early months of life. Swaddling has its roots throughout history. “Archaeological records suggest that swaddling first developed around 4000 B.C. in Central Asia with use of the back-pack cradle board by migrating peoples. As desertification progressed, migration from region to region became a relatively permanent way of life. Swaddling subsequently became an institutionalized part of child-rearing tradition in those same areas. (Wikipedia). And perhaps the most famous reference to swaddling comes from the New Testatment Bible in reference to the birth of baby Jesus (Luke 2.6 – 2.7).

The importance of swaddling has returned to popularity as medical science promotes the healing benefits of swaddling. Done right, swaddling can help an irritable baby become calm with the soothing properties of being wrapped snuggly thereby recreating a womb-like experience. Swaddling is also important in the early weeks of life as it helps to reduce the impact of the startle reflex that babies have and decreasing the likelihood of the baby arousing out of sleep too soon. Fewer sudden awakenings means the baby will have better REM sleep which is necessary for optimal brain development. Also, medical studies have shown that swaddled babies have a lower incidence of SIDS especially when the baby is swaddled and placed to sleep on their back. Swaddling also reduces the fussiness and irritability that babies experience related to colic due to the womb-like experience that is recreated, the decrease in over stimulation and babies who are swaddled with their hands near their face can learn to self soothe. But when not done right, then swaddling creates a frustrating and potentially dangerous situation for your baby. Examples of poor swaddling include the use of blankets that are too small or too thick. With blankets that are too small, the baby can kick off or out of the swaddle and if left unattended, this loose blanket is now a potential SIDS risk as the baby can roll and become entangled in the blanket. Also, if too thick a blanket is used or the babys room is too warm, then the baby can become at risk for overheating which is also noted by medical science to be a SIDS risk.

A good quality swaddle blanket is the best assurance of a safe and restful nights sleep for both baby and parents.
